Let’s start with an introduction. Tell us about yourself. Feel free to share your business, your life’s mission, and what brings you joy.
Tonya is the Chief Executive Director of Infinite Hope and Restoration Ministries ‘Second Chance Mothers’ Mentorship’ program (IHRM). IHRM was established in California in April 2010. In June 2021 IHRM was re-established in Colorado Springs. IHRM is a loving faith-based non-profit 501 (c) (3) reentry organization, dedicated to providing transitional housing (coming soon) and reentry support to mothers with young children who are exiting from County, State, and Federal Correctional Institutions.
I have the privilege of assisting, many women and mothers who struggle with the same behaviors as myself. For many years, I was stuck in a dreadful cycle of depression, suicidal thoughts, and unhealthy relationships. In my mind, I was in prison. It was not until I committed to a relationship with God that my life began to transform radically.
I have earned three degrees at Solano Community College, one in Human Services (AA), the other in Universal Studies: Social Science (AA), and lastly Universal Studies: Liberal Studies (AA). In the fall of 2015, I attended the University of California at Davis to earn a B.A. in Women’s Studies. In addition, I attended John F. Kennedy Law School and received a Paralegal Certificate in 2019. In 2022, I formed a Paralegal & Consultant LLC, DBA Mobile Notary Public business.
In addition to being a Chaplain, Pastoral Care Counselor, and Author, I knew there was a call on my life to minister to women and mothers. In 2008, I was allowed to step into my destiny. When I first walked onto the grounds of the California Correctional Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, CA, and currently in the LaVista Correctional Facility, Pueblo, CO, I knew I was where God wanted me to be. I have a passion for helping women and mothers be reunited with their child/children and gain freedom from mental and emotional turmoil so that they can live out their God-given purpose.Looking back over my journey, I can see how God has prepared me spiritually, emotionally, and mentally to reach out and help others obtain their second chance.
Here at BBN, we’re all about sharing women’s stories. Tell us about a time you had to overcome an obstacle? What did that moment in your life teach you?
How did I go through Elementary, Junior High, and High School without someone noticing that I was dyslexic? During my era of growing up, instead of educators getting to my root issue, they decided what was best for me, and often this included passing me along with my grades fluctuating from B’s to D’s. If you can remember, during the ’60s, D’s were considered a passing grade. By the grace of God, I managed to graduate from Berkeley High School with a GPA of 3.0. And so I believe that it’s crucial for me to tell my story. Me sharing my story is called paying it forward. Being diagnosed with Dyslexia does not define who you are. Many people who have Dyslexia have not developed ways to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills. I am here to help those who feel defeated because of this disorder. I want to reach people all over the world that I may never see in person who can relate to my story through the reading of this book. Come with me on this journey as I discuss how I discovered the beauty of being Dyslexic and that it doesn’t define who I am.
What do you believe is the biggest challenge women in business face?
I believe the biggest challenge women in business face is overcoming systemic barriers and biases that limit their opportunities for growth and advancement.
Despite progress in gender equality, women often encounter obstacles such as unequal access to funding, limited mentorship opportunities, and gender stereotypes that question their competence and leadership abilities. These challenges can hinder their professional development and restrict their potential to lead and innovate within their industries.
What did the younger version of you want to be when you grew up? When I was younger, I wanted to be a nurse. I pursued that career with dedication and passion until the door was closed. Even though I did not become a registered nurse, I see my role in bringing women back to God as a form of nursing, offering spiritual care and healing.
What advice would you give women in business?
My advice to women in business is to stay true to your values and believe in your capabilities. Embrace your authenticity and let your unique strengths shine. Build a strong network of supportive mentors and peers, and continually invest in your personal and professional development.
Develop resilience and perseverance to overcome setbacks, and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and what you deserve. Strive for a work-life balance that prioritizes your well-being, and always remember to give back by mentoring and supporting other women. By embracing these principles, you can navigate the business world with confidence and make a significant impact.
