“My life's mission and what brings me joy is one and the same: to create.”
Let’s start with an introduction. Tell us about yourself. Feel free to share your business, your life’s mission, and what brings you joy.
My name is Rozen Lalas, I am an entrepreneur & Independent Pop/R&B Artist. A little about me, I am a full-time content creator. What that looks like on a daily basis is me shooting content for other brands. For example, today I shot all day for Scentbird, a fragrance subscription company and DRMTLGY, a skincare company. I create content for those clients who then run ads on their social media. I'm the one who shoots all of it and grabs that content for them! I'm like a fairy godmother for anyone's content! Whether it be lifestyle content, product content, influencer content, TikTok trendy videos, whatever, you name it - I'm your go-to girl for that! The abundance that I get from my job as a full-time Content Creator allows me to pour into my other business. Rozen Lalas LLC is all things related to me as an Independent Pop/R&B Artist. My skills as a Content Creator really shine here because I'm also the one behind all my branding and social media content. I'm blessed to be able to create content and tell other brands' stories. I'm even more blessed that my job as a Content Creator makes it possible for me to live out my Artist dreams. The flexibility of this job makes it possible for me to do both. My life's mission and what brings me joy is one and the same: to create. I love to create no matter what canvas I'm using. I love to create and tell stories, whether it's my own or stories of other women, people, loved ones. That's absolutely my biggest passion and that's what brings me the most joy. Outside of always "doing", I love to just be and travel. That's when I'm the most at peace - marveling at culture and other places. Finding that perfect destination to call home for x amount of days - that's totally my cup of tea! That's what brings me the most joy outside of creating.
Here at BBN, we’re all about sharing Women’s stories. Tell us about a time you had to overcome an obstacle? What did that moment in your life teach you?
With overcoming obstacles as an entrepreneur and as an independent musician, I feel like I am challenged a lot. Quite recently I had a show where I didn’t find out until the day beforehand that I would be the one responsible for playback, that there was no cordless microphone available, and that the stage was very small. I had to scramble to make everything still run smoothly: finding a new cordless microphone setup, getting to the venue early to sound check, making sure the dancers were comfortable and making the proper adjustments with a smaller stage. The stress in the anxiety is almost defeating and it can just swallow you whole at times, but I feel like those who go over the hump and see was on the other side of that stress and anxiety are the true artists that experience success and experience the highs and we all want to achieve because they want to see was on the other side. They don’t just stop and they don’t let the fear cripple them. Obstacles are such a huge learning opportunity because it shows you how far you’ll go. How much do you love your craft? How much are you willing to sacrifice? How much are you willing to bleed, sweat, cry to have that show go on? That moment where it felt like “do-or-die” really was when I had to kick it into high gear and pull out all the stops. “The show must go on!” This instance taught me that we go through all of those big stressful moments just to get to the other side of it to be reminded that it was all worth it in the end. It sets your soul on fire. We do it for the satisfaction of those two minutes on stage where the crowd and the audience is just applauding you, singing your song, and cheering you on. We do it for the feeling, we do it for the love. The love of having your voice heard on a stage that is bigger than us. Obstacles like this show me that nothing good or worth having comes so easily.
When I was 8 years old I wanted to “sing people back to health.”
What do you believe is the biggest challenge women in business face?
Off the top of my head, I feel like the biggest challenge that women in business face is limiting beliefs. Our own limiting beliefs can be something that can make or break your business because whether it’s your limiting beliefs, or other peoples limiting beliefs, or society's - it can weigh down on you. If you let that happen, it can really steal your success before you even embark on it before you even take that step. So, with limiting beliefs, I definitely think that us, as women, face that every single day. When I say society I mean every day, I believe that women all over the world are pushing the envelope, and changing the narrative. That women can, too, be business owners and it’s not a #BOSSBABE 'trend', it’s just “boss.” We can be bosses too. We are normalizing that, but I feel like sometimes the past narrative of society, sometimes specific cultures, a lot of those old narratives slow down the process of our entrepreneurial journey so I believe that believes what can make, or break us as women in the business.
What did the younger version of you want to be when you grew up?
When I was like 8-years old, I remember telling my Lola when she asked me what I want to be when I grow up I said I wanted to be a “singing nurse” and she was like “what do you mean by that”, and I said I wanted to “sing people back to health.”
“Fall in love with the act of change and fall in love with every step of the change..”
What advice would you give Women in Business?
The advice I would give to women in business is, “fall in love with the process of change.” Fall in love with the act of change and fall in love with every step of the change that is happening or is to come because we have to be malleable and flexible in that way. No matter what our business throws at us, or what obstacles come, let the chips fall where they may and take everything as it comes to you. I would also say be fearless — or better yet it’s okay to be scared, but do scared anyway. Whatever it is, make that call, reach out to that person, send that person a DM, create that website, create that app. Go for it and be scared, that’s totally okay. Just do it scared.
