Empowering Women to Have a Fighting Chance - Doris’ Story
Empowering women to have a voice can be incredibly powerful, both for individuals and for society as a whole. When women have a platform to express themselves and their opinions, they can influence conversations, challenge traditional norms and stereotypes, and advocate for their rights and those of other marginalized groups.
Giving women a voice can also lead to greater gender equality, as it enables them to participate more fully in political, social, and economic spheres. Women who are empowered to speak up and share their experiences and perspectives can help to break down barriers and challenge discrimination, ultimately leading to a more just and equitable society.
Moreover, when women have a voice, they can inspire others and serve as role models for the next generation. Boss Babe Networking is all about sharing women’s stories and their accomplishments. Women can help to build confidence and self-esteem in other women and girls, encouraging them to pursue their own dreams and goals.
Overall, the power in giving women a voice cannot be overstated. By empowering women to speak up and be heard, we can create a more just and equitable society for all.
Let’s start with an introduction. Tell us about yourself. Feel free to share your business, your life’s mission, and what brings you joy. My Name is Doris Rivera-Black and I have an amazing husband, Kevin Black, and the best kiddos - Selena (28), Cynthia (23) and Alex (13). My family is my everything! I am a Realtor in Colorado and absolutely love to help people navigate through the process of buying or selling their homes. It brings me such joy to see them either receive those keys for the first time or receive that nice check after selling their homes. I am also co-owner of Renzo Gracie Colorado East, a Brazilian JiuJitsu school in Colorado Springs. It is my absolute passion to help empower others and help them learn to defend themselves. As a prior law enforcement officer and survivor of Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, this is very personal for me.
“Being a business owner comes with many challenges but the greatest challenge I've had is learning to be organized with my time..”
Here at BBN, we’re all about sharing Women’s stories. Tell us about a time you had to overcome an obstacle? What did that moment in your life teach you? I've had many things I've had to overcome, but the greatest obstacle was overcoming a specific domestic violence incident. In 2006, my ex husband kidnapped me at gunpoint, sexually assaulted me and I was sure that day he would kill me. By the grace of God, I was able to escape but it left me quite broken, ashamed and humiliated. I met Jesus that night when I cried out and it was through my journey in following Him and allowing Him into my heart and wounds that I have been able to heal and help others that were in similar situations. This experience taught me that although we may experience difficult things in life, that it does not have to define us. Although I know God did not intend for this to happen to me, He used it to draw me closer to Him and to help save lives. I am grateful for every breath I take and I hope that I can help offer others the same hope. To Never, ever give up!
What do you believe is the biggest challenge women in business face? Thankfully I have never had to face any challenges different from our male business owner counterparts. Being a business owner comes with many challenges but the greatest challenge I've had is learning to be organized with my time, organizing the business budget and knowing when to REST!
What did the younger version of you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be an archeologist and a police officer. :-) I was able to accomplish being a law enforcement officer for about 11 years until I decided I needed a change.
“I am grateful for every breath I take and I hope that I can help offer others the same hope.”
“BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!”
What advice would you give Women in Business? BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! You are more than capable of being a business owner. Be mindful of who's in your corner. Surround yourself with those who will not only encourage & support you, but also those who can offer you constructive feedback. Boss Babes is a GREAT resource for that. NEVER stop learning. Do everything in love. Be bold. Value your team. Take wise risks and have fun!
